First of all, allow me on behalf of the steering committee, to welcome you all as delegates, distinguised guests, scholars, colleagues, and friends to come topresent, listen, share, and learn at our 9thAsia-Pacific Conference of Reproductive and Sexual Health and Rights organized at Halong city, Quang Ninh Province, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
Ladies and Gentleman,
Today is counted as the last day of a 20-month continuous working process for all preparation neededinorganizing this conference. Our VPHA has been given this honorable responsibilityfrom the international steering committee, from our Ministries and government. This process is a long managerial planning exercise withstrong commitment in order to have a best conference. We would also like to show thru this activitiy our beautiful country with its participating, and dynamic people!
To turn all that wishes into reality, during last 20 months we have closely worked with our amazing International Steering Committee (ISC), the National Steering Committee (NSC) which was set up immediately after the flag of convener had been handed from our Myanmar colleagues, those who had been successfully organized the 8th conference. Five ISC and a correspondent NSC meetings arranged during 20 months period has witnessed what we have done. During these meetings, all committees namely Scientific, Fund raising and allocation, Logistic have been established, discussed in details all lessons learnt and experiencedfromprevious conferences aiming at improving quality of this one. There are two main sets of things that every conference would have to care for: Program and Logistic. For the former, it aims at developing a good themeand sub-themes which reflect what we want to focus on, and how to scientifically and appropriately address them. For the latter, it aims athow to get best satisfaction of all participants. Those issues have been raised and roughly discussed in all ISC meetings. All up-dated scientific works and practical experiences received have been carefully judged and selected in order to have best presenters, researchers in all parallel presentations. Experiences and wide international relationships allowed each ISC member to identify best scholars to speak in all plenary sessions. Only 168 abstracts have been selected amongst more than 1,000 submitted for presenting in 35 parallel sessions. These are good evidences of well performance of the Scientific Committee in selection process.
Being a responsible member of the United Nation, VN has been among the first countries making its signature on the UN SDG in 2015. This conference, by its declarations, has taken promotion of implementing SDG as its principles! That explains why every 2 years, the opening of this conference will provide good opportunities for all countries in the region to review what have been done or yet done and making those done better. This conference hence, proves its importance in monitoring the implementation of SDG. That explains 18 years remaining of this conference and it will go on. Cambodia is the next of its convener! I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that Cambodia has gotten this right though persuading the ISC about their ability and commitment. They are the winner in a list of countries expressed their interest. I am telling you this information since it is one of the important componence of the ISC discussions, especially in some last meetings.
The location of our conference is right in the well-known Halong bay, which has twice named as world natural heritage. This has been selected by most of our ISC members. Our VPHA team is responsible to make that decision into reality, we could not do that without support from our MoH, Prof. Nguyen Viet Tien, the vice-minister is the personmaking this beautiful location be home of our conference. We would like to thank the supports of Quang Ninh team of leaders, especially the president, Madame Vu Thi Thu Thuyand all related departments those who have treated us as their precious guesses and friends in welcoming us to their house. This work would not be fulfilled without supports from ministries, departments of the central, and local authorities, international/national donors, international/national students, art groups, reporters and all of you as participants of this conference. Last, I would like to thank VPHA teamfor their continuous efforts during last 20 months with their hard working, but not allowing to forget other important functions of our VPHA. They havegreatly contributing in coordinating, fund raising, administering, developing and finishing this long-term preparation conference, which serves more than 1,000 participants came from nearly 50 countries of the region and the world.
I would like to propose a very big bravo for all of us!
Ladies and Gentleman,
During 3 days of the conference, we will follow exactly plan of activities, which have been clearly planned and detailed on a small guideline available in your hand. I am sure that you will follow those by your priorities. A message that we want to communicate to you is that continue working with youin a closer network is our dream.By connecting to each other in doing a similarresearch/intervention projectsthat we share in this conference, will bring us to much greater value and lessons learnt will definitely be shared in coming conferences under some sort of trans-national and inter-regional cooperation. We don’t want our work for the last 20 months be ended just after this meeting! I have been told that donors would like to support such approaches. I am sure that we also like these ideas since they can help us to develop our new knowledges, practices and models. Public health so much needs such models for widely applyingin order to reducing burden of our population. I think, there is still some gaps to be filled in between the conferences and I wish these shalbe starting from this conference. We are very happy to coordinate these activities!
Time for me is going to finish. Once again, I would like to welcome you all to this event! I wish you have a great time anddon’t forget that you are in a world natural heritage. Pls. save your time to fully joining yourself to it after this conference.
I wish you enjoy a whole working and relaxing week in Halong bay.
Thanks you so much.
